Power Games

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit (SCO) is wrapping up today in China. The summit included countries from Asia, the Middle East and Africa. The primary players include China Russia, India, and North Korea.

During the summit, Chinese leader Xi promised $280 million in loans to SCO. Member states this year and over 1 billion in loans of the next three years. These are two key quotes that he made during the summit.

“The house rules of a few countries should not be imposed on others,”

“We should leverage the strength of our mega-sized markets and economic complementarity between member states and improve trade and investment facilitation.”

Donald Trump has launched his global trade war. He has also cut funding too and withdrawn from international organizations, and he has cut foreign aid funding. He has done all this while alienating his allies. His MAGA base is loving his America first anti-globalization policies. Of course they would.

What Trump fails to realize is that all his actions are driving countries into the hands of the SCO and China in particular. Canada, until recently, America’s strongest ally has been alienated by Trump. Our economy has been affected whether we like it or not. Canada in response is working to diminish it reliance on trade with the US and to strengthen trade ties with other countries. One of these countries eventually might be China, has to be China. What Canada is doing a number of other countries are doing the same thing.

Even if the next president in the US is a democrat, the damage Trump has done will never be completely reversed. China will become the dominant power unless things change soon.

That is all I have for today.
