Woke up this morning, turn on the TV, expecting to see news on Bill Clinton’s testimony yesterday and renewed calls for Trump to be deposed. Instead, the news was all about Israel and the US, striking Iran, and Iran striking back at various facilities in the Middle East.
Donald Trump gave a speech calling for the Iranian people to change the regime in Iran. Part of the reason for Trump’s call for regime change was to end Iran’s continuous efforts to develop nuclear weapons. Just remember that there was a nuclear weapon agreement in place negotiated by Obama, which Trump tore up. Under that agreement, Iran would’ve halted any development of nuclear capabilities.
According to rumours there were coordinated strikes on three buildings where Iranian top officials had gathered together. There was also a strike at the headquarters of the Iranian supreme leader. If true, these were all attempts to cut off the heads of the Iranian regime. If true, it is unknown how successful these coordinated attacks were.
Let’s be clear. Iran is a brutal dictatorship that has killed thousands. If the regime is replaced, who will replace them? It could end up being a military dictatorship formed by the Iranian revolutionary guard.
It is highly doubtful that there will be American boots on the ground. That happened in Iraq in 2003 and we all know how that turned out. It also happened in Afghanistan and we all know how that one turned out. Many years ago it did happen in Vietnam and again we all know how that turned out.
Reactions throughout the world has been mixed. Russia an ally of Iran is condemning it. Democrats and some Republicans are condemning it given that authority for war must be given through Congress and Trump did not seek it. Mark Carney had the following response.
“Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and security.”
One person who was very happy with what happened this morning is Danielle Smith. The attacks on Iran will surely increase oil prices given that Iran is a main producer of oil. Analyst are saying that in the short term oil prices could go over $100 per barrel.
This is just the first day. It is anticipated that over the next few days, US and Israel will carry out a number of strikes reducing Iranian infrastructure and attacking Iranian leadership. What happens after that nobody really knows. One thing for sure blood will be shed and unfortunately, most of it will be Iranian.
That’s all I have for today.
