Yes Canada No Trump

It is still the early hours of October 20. Just a few hours after the polls closed in Alberta’s referendum.

Albertans have made a definite statement that they do want to stay in Canada. Approximately 3/4 of voters have voted to stay.

Donald Trump’s desire of making Canada a 51st state, took a severe blow, last night. The Trump administration has always looked at Alberta as the weakest link as the gateway to turning Canada into a 51st state. In their view, Alberta was the gateway to turning Canada into a 51st state. Yet Albertans strongly blew away that opening.

At the same time, Alberta has sent a strong message to Ottawa that we are not happy with the way things are going on issues such as immigration. Although the results are just trickling in, it looks like the other questions, especially in the area of immigration, may have a yes vote majority.

Danielle Smith might skate through this relatively unscathed. If there are a majority of yes votes in the remaining nine questions. She will be able to say that her approach is working. Ottawa has to start coming to the negotiation table. This is the best result she could have hoped for. We all will have a clearer picture tomorrow.
