Listening to an audiobook, titled ‘Adolph Hitler’, written by John Toland and published in 1976. It is a detailed biography of Hitler’s life and I am part way through it. I am struck by the similarities between Hitler and Trump.
First, one difference between the two. Trump dodged the draft. Hitler fought in World War 1, for four years, suffering wounds and being gassed.
Now the similarities. Both were nationalists. Both drew large crowds. Both tried to overthrow the legitimate government. Trump in January 6 (Biden’s government to be) and Hitler with the Munich beer hall Putsch back in 1923. Both failed. Both police and supporters were killed in the attempt, went/will go to trial over the attempt . Hitler was tried for treason. Both trials were/will be highly publicized. Both used/will use the trial for propaganda purposes. Hitler attacked the judges during his testimony. Trump did the same in his fraud trial and will no doubt do so in the January 6 trial. Hitler got 5 years but was released after 8 months.
In both cases the trials were considered to be game over for Hitler and Trump. US media said that Hitler’s career was over. Many thought that Trump with all his legal difficulties would end his career. Wrong on both counts. Despite legal troubles both had continued fanatical support. Hitler became leader of Germany. Trump might be president, next year. Hitler caused WW2 and destroyed his country in doing so. I will just leave it there.
