When Trump was just a supposed real estate mogul he was pro choice. Back in a 1999 Meet The Press appearance, Trump said,
“I hate the concept of abortion. … But still, I just believe in choice,”
When he start his run for President, his position totally flip flopped. He actually that women seeking abortions should be subject to some form of punishment. The backlash was brutal
Well, he got to be President and he was able to insert three right wing justices onto the Supreme Court. Roe vs, Wade was overturned and Trump has been boasting about it ever since. Some Republicans, with this apparent victory, at hand, were voicing, out loud, a national wide abortion ban with no exceptions. Red state governments began implementing extremely tough abortion provisions.
But then a funny thing happened. Democracy happened. Abortion protections were being voted on. The first red flag for Republicans was in red state Kansas. Abortion rights were protected by an overwhelming vote. This string of pro choice victories, by ballot has continued. Most shocking was the vote that happened in bible belt Alabama a couple of weeks ago in the Alabama state legislature. A woman with pro choice being her main plank won a special election
Florida has just passed legislation, prohibiting abortion after Six weeks. Trump was forced to comments. After a few days pause he came with the following response.
“My view is now that we have abortion where everyone wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation, or perhaps both. And whatever they decide must be the law of the land. In this case, the law of the state.”
Harry Truman once said ‘the buck stops here’. Well, Trump just passed the buck. The reaction has been swift. Trump did not comment as to after how many weeks that abortion should be restricted. Many women do not know after six weeks that they are pregnant.
Is this going to be a game changer? Signs indicate that it will be.
