it can’t happen here can it? What happened in South Korea? The last couple days could be a precursor of things to come in the United States two years down the road.
On Tuesday night, President Yoon declared martial law. Yoon had accused the opposition party of conducting anti-state activities. The opposition party, Democrats, were in the process of impeaching a number of government officials and had not passed any of Yoon’s legislation.
The Democrats had become the majority party in the Korean Parliament earlier this year. Their victory was set to be a referendum on the scandals that had plagued the Yoon presidency since Yoon had come to power.
under martial law, all political activities, including rallies, were to be banned. Furthermore, manipulation of public opinion by the media were to be prohibited. Parliamentarians, forced their way through soldiers into Parliament and voided the martial law decree by a vote of 190 to nothing. All parties in Parliament joined together to void the decree by Wednesday morning martial law had been rescinded.
In the 2026 elections, the Democrats quite easily will take control of the house in the US. We all know that Donald Trump, in love with authoritarian leaders, will get frustrated with Democrats pushing back on his authoritarian legislation. Donald Trump has already talked about martial law. Donald Trump has already talked about controlling the media. What happened in South Korea the last couple days could very easily happened in the US in two years. We have gone far beyond the it can’t happen here experience because it has and is.
All I got for today.
