Tariff Mess

Presidents Trump and Musk have taken a scythe in cutting down the number of US federal employees. This includes cuts to the FAA where they are having trouble getting the required number of air traffic controllers. How safe do you feel flying in or to the US these days?

Another area where I’m sure they’re doing cutting is border services where, in actuality they should be doubling the number of resources there

Just because a tariff goes into effect, it isn’t automatic that it’s gonna go affect on the day stated. There are bureaucracies, policies, procedures that have to be put in place for all this to happen.

For example, Canada says in retaliation we will levy tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods coming into Canada. We will levy tariffs on another $155 billion worth of goods in a month from now. Ottawa gave a lead time for all this to be put in place. Customs workers, the policy wonks, in Ottawa commonly referred to as the ivory Tower by border officials (I was one of those policy wonks) now have a lead time to put policies procedures, and identify which goods will be tariffed. Then they will send all this to the various regions for customs, inspectors to look at and for them to say WTF are these idiots at Ottawa headquarters doing now? We don’t have time to read all this garbage. Don’t they know we are already overloaded?

But, with the lead time and the consistency, it all works out more or less. It is also helpful that the tariffs on the $30 billion with of goods is still in place

Now, pity the poor US workers at their version of headquarters and at the ports. Trump has changed everything almost every day. Almost every freaking day. Is one thing and then it is another. It is one rule then it is another. We’re not gonna tariff everything. We’re only gonna tariff things that fall under USMCA content compliance. We are also gonna put tax on things that we didn’t put on tax on before because of the previous free trade agreement with between Canada in the US

Now it makes it worse they don’t have only one border to worry about but two. Massive major headache. An inspector at the southern border as he sees an illegal immigrant, skipping over the border, asking his fellow worker what’s the tariff rate today on Mexican milk? The other guy looking over his manual , oh his computer searching for minutes then flipping a coin.

If you think I’m kidding about this, I’m not

Even with Canada’s more stable, leadership, there is a Facebook group called Canadian snowbirds. People on the site are asking what are the experiences coming into Canada now from the states with this tariff thing. A lot of responses are it depends on which customs inspector you get at the border.
